Natalya Boeva (mezzo-soprano) won the first prize in the vocals category and the special prize for the best performance of the commissioned composition by Stefano Gervasoni at the 67th ARD international music competition.

After studying singing in her home town St. Petersburg in Russia, the young mezzo-soprano appeared as a soloist at the St. Petersburg Children’s Musical Theatre »Zazerkalie« as Angelina and Isabella (»La Cenerentola« and »L’italiana in Algeri« by Rossini), Laura (»Iolanta« by Tchaikovsky) and Noah’s wife (»Noye’s Fludde« by Britten) as well as in numerous oratorios and recitals with the State Philharmonic Orchestra. From 2016 to 2018, she studied with Prof. Christiane Iven at the Theaterakademie August Everding. In 2018, Natalya Boeva sang in several academy productions, including »Happy Birthday, Lenny« and »Artaserse« by Hasse at the reopening of the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth. In the summer of 2018, Natalya Boeva appeared as Dorabella in »Così fan tutte« at the Kammeroper München in Nymphenburg Palace. Since the 2018/19 season, she has been an ensemble member at Staatstheater Augsburg, where she played the role of Charlotte in Massenet’s »Werther« and will make her debut as a composer with Richard Strauss’s »Ariadne auf Naxos« in the coming season.

Living in Munich since 2011, Polina Spirina (piano) comes from St. Petersburg, Russia, where she studied music and won various scholarships and competitions.   In 2018, she completed a master’s degree at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich in the classes of Prof. Olaf Dreßler (piano), Prof. Fritz Berger (chamber music) and Prof. Fritz Schwinghammer (lied interpretation). Polina Spirina teaches in the music schools in Unterschleißheim and Grafing, her students regularly winning competitions and playing at class evenings. She gives piano and chamber music concerts in St. Petersburg, Munich and other European cities. Polina Spirina is also a passionate chamber musician. She has two permanent concert duos – a cello duo with Nargiza Yusupova and a lied duo with mezzo-soprano Natalya Boeva – and plays in other ensembles with various instrumentations.

Although performing together only since 2016, the young artists have already taken part in numerous concerts in Russia and Germany, including a programme of songs by Richard Strauss in the Gasteig’s Small Concert Hall as part of the »Long Night of Music«. For the program »Meine Seele weinte…« (My Soul Wept...), the two chose the deeply stirring works of late Romanticists R. Strauss and K. Szymanowski and Russian contemporaries D. Smirnov and A. Labyrich, in which the protagonists’ heartbreaking feelings lead them to doubt their own existence.
