Contemporary Indian music, spiced with a touch of classical and fusion and blended with Indian dance. Music that also touches western listeners.
The two groups performing on this evening will give the audience an impression of the diversity of Indian music:
The performing ensembles include the Maharaj Trio, an instrumental trio playing classical Indian music on sarod, sitar and tabla and consisting of Pandit Vikash Maharaj and his two sons Abhishek and Prabhash Maharaj from the northern Indian city of Varanasi. Within this family of musicians, the musical knowledge has been passed down from father to son for 500 years. The pieces presented by the trio capture and inspire the listeners partly through meditative calm, partly through captivating, fast rhythms. Besides improvising in the style of classical North Indian music, the trio weaves influences of other Western styles, such as blues and jazz, into its repertoire.
Living in Munich, Indian musician Nishad Phatak has mastered the balancing act of working as an engineer while pursuing his passion for music as a singer who touches people with his voice. In India he has won a prize in a young singers’ contest comparable to German television’s »Voice of Germany«. His band is truly a colourful mix, the young musicians coming from India, Malaysia, Germany, Sweden and Iran. Rousing Bollywood and traditional tunes with echoes of pop, rock and fusion await the audience.
The dance duo Deodatt Persaud and Ekaterina Chmeleva will perform Indian Kathak dance – the dance of the Maharaja.
