First performed in 1972, Mauricio Kagel’s »EXOTICA« is one of the post-war avant garde works that is both pioneering and contentious. It is an ode to exoticism; a bizarre hymn to the variety and diversity of the world around us, or even a search for the universal roots of fundamental music making, of simple, archaic instruments. Instead of attempting to master unfamiliar instruments, the interpretation created for aDevantgarde takes familiar Alpine ones – from basic musical spoons to zithers and organ pipes – and experiments with them to produce unfamiliar and exotic sounds. The results redefine ethnic and cultural boundaries that appeared to be firmly entrenched.
Mauricio Kagel was informed of this idea developed by Markus Schmitt and was very interested in how it was to be implemented. The rights to this interpretation have been held by Johannes X. Schachtner since 2015.

Boundaries. Setting them. Crossing them. Ignoring them. Stylistic boundaries, boundaries of perception, physical boundaries. Pushing the boundaries to open yourself up to new ideas. Thirty years after it was founded, the 16th edition of the aDevantgarde festival boldly explores aspects that can be unlocked using the word »boundary«.
