In the 1950s, leading scientists from across the country as well as abroad was brought together to develop China’s nuclear energy in a remote area of the Gobi Desert in north-western China. Following the economic reforms of the 1980s, the government built the largest titanium oxide factory in China there. In 2009, the operating company fell victim to the global financial crisis and China’s economic reforms, taking the 1200 employees to the brink of poverty. To live or to die?
A vicious struggle between the various parties – workers and employees, managers, investors and shareholders – ensued. Recording these conflicts over a period of several years, this documentary shines a light on the background to the various interests and follows the company’s internal struggles in a communist-liberal hybrid economy.
