China 2017, 96 minutes, original language with English subtitles, directed by Long Zheng
Documentary about the consequences of China’s one-child policy: The film maker’s parents wanted a son, so his older sister was put up for adoption; the one-child policy was ended in 2016 – now his older sister is due to give birth to her second child.
This unusually personal look at China’s one-child politics results in a humanistic documentary that offers a deep insight into the reality of a Chinese family today and the place of children in it. It also shows how the profound changes the country is undergoing are affecting the daily lives of Chinese people in rural areas.
