China 1999, 93 minutes, original language with English subtitles, directed by Jianqi Huo
With Teng Rujun, Liu Ye

The film tells the story of an old postman who delivers the mail in communities in the mountains of Hunan. Planning to retire, he trains his son as his successor. The son accompanies his father on his rounds and together they deliver mail along the 100 kilometre long path that leads deep into rural China. From the recipients of the letters, the son learns a great deal about his father, whom he hardly knows himself.

Based on a short story by Jianming Peng, »Postmen in the Mountains« takes the viewer into the wild landscape of the southern and southwestern regions of Hunan Province. Sections of the film were shot in a village of the Dong people, providing an insight into the cultural life of this ethnic minority.

The film won the 2002 Audience Award at the Montreal World Film Festival.
