D.R. Congo 2018, 79 minutes, original language with English subtitles, directed by Machérie Ekwa Bahango
Living on the streets of Kinshasa, 19-year-old Maki joins a group of young Sapeurs – street performers who present themselves as living artworks in striking designer clothes. When her husband Mbingazor, the leader of the gang, increasingly becomes a slave to alcohol and drugs, she leaves him and continues the fight to secure her daily survival alone.
Making other street children steal for her, frustrated and bossy Maki meets the lovable Acha, a skilled thief who is new to the city. The two soon become inseparable, which sparks Mbingazor’s jealousy.
Director Machérie Ekwa Bahango illuminates another side of life on the street by telling the story of an intimate friendship in uncompromisingly harsh images.
