The documentary film »Talking About Trees« accompanies the four film-maker friends Altayeb, Ibrahim, Manar and Suleiman in their venture to revive Sudanese cinema and to help Sudanese film history gain wider attention.
With great devotion and humour, the older gentlemen, founders of the Sudanese Film Club, rebel against the repressive government of Umar al-Bashir, who has gradually closed all of the country’s 65 cinemas since taking power in 1989. They passionately support the revival of an old open-air cinema in the capital Khartoum: they paint the walls, clean the old cinema screen, fix a new sign above the entrance, restore the old film stock and battle against the authorities’ objections. Despite major hurdles and numerous setbacks, they do not give up, their seemingly untiring commitment providing a ray of hope.
