Recently widowed Abla lives with her daughter Warda in the old Medina of Casablanca and sells home-made pastries through a window of her apartment. Mourning for her deceased husband, whom, as a woman, she was not allowed to accompany to his funeral, makes her seem lonely, haggard and withdrawn.
One day, a young woman who has fled her village to hide her illegitimate pregnancy knocks on her door. Unaware that this encounter will change her life forever, Abla allows the woman to stay with her for a few nights.
The two women eventually find a mutual bond. Working together in the small bakery, they confront their pains and wounds of the past and gradually regain their ability to feel joy. Time and again, the camera captures the development of their relationship with amazingly sensual close-ups of the women’s hands as they bake and knead dough.
