Based on the novel of the same name by the Rwandan author Scholastique Mukasonga, this film is set in the 1970s high up in the mountains of Rwanda. Here, at one of the sources of the White Nile, a Black Madonna watches over a Catholic girls’ boarding school, where the daughters of businessmen, rich merchants, high-ranking officers and ministers enjoy a privileged education to prepare them for their future lives as wives of the country’s elite. According to the school’s quota rules, ten percent of the students must belong to the Tutsi ethnic group, which many Hutus refuse to accept. Increasingly, political campaigns and conspiracies place the girls’ relationships, hopes and desires at risk as gradually – in the school’s microcosm – the fatal consequences of colonialism become apparent.
