About the St Matthew Passion

Johann Sebastian Bach’s St Matthew Passion moves listeners like few other compositions, evoking at the same time both sorrow and solace. Bach is presumed to have performed the work for the first time in 1727 at the Good Friday Vespers in Leipzig’s St Thomas Church. With texts by Christian Friedrich Henrici, the work tells the story of the Passion of Christ according to chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew. While it is intensely emotive and highly complex, it also contains engaging motifs. To Bach himself, the work was extremely important: having completed it, he continued to work on the composition for two further decades. In the course of the 18th century, it slipped into obscurity until, in 1829, its revival by Felix Mendelssohn ushered in the Bach Renaissance. Today, the St Matthew Passion occupies a special place in Bach’s oeuvre and is the indispensable prelude to the Easter holidays for Christians and classical music aficionados alike.

New date for the concert originally scheduled for 10 April 2020 and 2 April 2021.
