Barely a work in music history captivates both listeners and performers like Johann Sebastian Bach’s St Matthew Passion. Precisely because of its message, which is at the same time both stirring and consoling, the extensive opus with its musical, emotional and spiritual intensity occupies a singular position in Bach’s oeuvre. The composition is believed to have premiered in 1727 at the Good Friday Vespers in Leipzig’s St Thomas Church. Performed every year in the Gasteig’s Philharmonic Hall for a number of years now, it has become an established regular in Munich’s concert calendar. Whether it elicits cheers or heartfelt emotion, the St Matthew Passion is invariably a wonderful way of ringing in the Easter holidays.
