In autumn 2018 the Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša gave his stunning début with the BRSO, playing Josef Suk’s rarely heard monumental »Asrael Symphony«. The CD release of this live recording received a Pizzicato Supersonic Award. Now Hrůša, the head of the Bamberg Symphony since 2016, will again present repertoire from his native country with contralto Gerhild Romberger. Dvořák once said that his »Biblical Songs« have to be not only sung, but prayed. These ten psalm settings, composed in New York in 1898, are sustained by a distinctive tone of intimacy and concentration. In contrast, the second part of the programme features the erratic power of Brahms’s First Symphony with its huge emotional range, from a bleak C minor to a warm and radiant alphorn melody and echoes of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy in the finale.
