Gabriela Montero, piano
Conducted by Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla
If there were a prescribed quota of women for events in Germany’s major concert halls, the concert of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra would be the perfect role model.
With her appointment in 2016 as Music Director of the CBSO – one of The UK’s premier orchestras – Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla made headlines. Now the acclaimed music director has signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, making her the first female conductor with a contract with this illustrious record label since it was founded 120 years ago.
For Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 1, another noteworthy artist also takes to the stage: from the powerful chords of the opening theme through the lyrical melodies of the slow movement to the rapid runs of the finale: With her brilliant and emotionally charged playing, Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero elicits multilayered facets of sound from this work that was once considered unplayable.
