City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra
Gabriela Montero, piano
Conducted by Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla

A role model of women's power

If there were a prescribed quota of women for events in Germany's major concert halls, the concert of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) would certainly tick all the boxes. Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla's appointment as Music Director of the CBSO – one tof the UK'S premier orchestras – made headlines in 2016. Three years later, the acclaimed musical director landed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, making her the first female conductor since the classical label was established 120 years ago. In 2020, she was crowned conductor of the year in the »Opus Klassik« award.

For Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No 1, another noteworthy artist also takes to the stage: from the powerful chords of the opening theme through the lyrical melodies of the slow movement to the rapid runs of the finale: With her brilliant and emotionally charged playing, Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero elicits multilayered facets of sound from this work that was once considered unplayable.
