Twenty years of Digitalanalog – a farewell to the Gasteig

This year is auspicious for the Digitalanalog festival: it is celebrating its 20th birthday and this is also the last time it will be held at the Gasteig in Haidhausen before renovation begins. The arts centre has been the festival’s permanent home since it started in 2007. When work began on this year’s event, framework conditions for events held in October were still up in the air, so organisers wasted no time on considering possible alternatives as well – after all the Digitalanalog’s motto is »constant change«!

Please note: The 3G plus rule applies at the festival

Visitors must have been vaccinated, have recovered or have been tested using a valid PCR test within the past 48 hours and must provide personal photo ID. Due to these regulations, masks are not required and distancing rules and alcohol ban do not apply at Digitalanalog. Regardless of their personal vaccination status, children and pupils (accompanied by a legal guardian) are exempt from the 3G or 3G plus rules, as they are regularly tested in school. Please have your student ID ready as proof. Further information can be found at  www.digitalanalog.org, along with a detailed event schedule.

Spotlight on the local scene

Although the 2021 festival will not be the usual event with its 12,000 visitors, there will be no shortage of interesting and renowned artists as the festival marks its 20th year. This time, the spotlight has been turned on the local scene, with the aim of giving as many Bavarian artists as possible the opportunity to say farewell to the largest arts centre in Europe in its current form.
Organisers Claudia and Stefan Holmeier have said their goal is to make new ideas accessible and – most importantly – achievable for everyone. Digitalanalog works to break down the rigid boundaries between genres and scenes and to provide an interdisciplinary platform for audio and video, sub, pop and club culture and experimental art. With a nod to the subtitle of the album of the same name by Austrian artist Curd Duca, the combination of the two elements digital and analogue has become the festival’s name and leitmotif.

»The Gasteig has been our home for 15 years, allowing us to present experimental visuals alongside analogue and digital musicians in the world’s very best concert halls and most innovative colour cubes. This year will be the last time we can visit the lushly carpeted foyers of the red brick edifice high above the Isar river. One last chance to stroll through the auditoriums and corridors and to sense that nothing has changed about this city’s zest for life, even 18 months after Covid-19 came on the scene!«
