The new programme of the Junges Orchester features music from the classical repertoire to the great romantics. In addition to Sergei Rachmaninov’s Symphony No 2, the Egmont and Leonore (No 3) Overtures by Ludwig van Beethoven will be performed – a prelude to the 2020 Beethoven Year. Both of Beethoven’s works deal with liberation: the Dutch resist their Spanish oppressors in the Egmont and Leonore secures her husband’s release from prison. Thus they embody a similar frame of mind to that which Rachmaninov may have possibly felt ten years after the disastrous reviews of his Symphony No 1. After moving to Dresden, he dared to start anew with a creative rebirth that finally paid off. The world premiere of his Symphony No 2 in St Petersburg was a complete success.
Das Junge Orchester consists of around 80 committed young musicians, mainly students, who have evolved not only as a musical ensemble but also in close friendship. Conducted by Christoph Schäfer, they pursue challenging symphonic orchestral literature in weekly rehearsals.
