Khatia Buniatishvili, piano
Conductor: Gianandrea Noseda
Khatia Buniatishvili has a very personal relationship with Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 1. It was the first opus she performed publicly at the age of 18: »I remember exactly how, for the first time, I was enveloped in the warm sound of the strings, how the wind instruments seemed to carry me – it was like a dream, a magical feeling that I will never forget!«
Despite the negative assessment of the work by Tchaikovsky’s admired friend and mentor, the legendary piano virtuoso Nikolai Rubinstein, the Concerto has witnessed a remarkable change of image: today it is regarded throughout the world as one of the most popular piano concertos and is the most played of its genre. Hardly a music enthusiast is not familiar with its majestic beginning: the piano, with powerful, sweeping chords, accompanying the orchestra’s emotive theme to immediately captivate the listener.
