The original orchestra and soundtrack from TV series »Babylon Berlin«
It is 1929; the world is a different place. Berlin is wild, grubby, glamorous and party-crazy all at the same time. The Moka Efti Orchestra, a 14-piece ensemble led by composers Nikko Weidemann and Mario Kamien as well as saxophonist and arranger Sebastian Borkowski, brings back the music and zeitgeist of the 1920s. The concert audience is taken back to the Moka Efti, one of 1920s Berlin’s amusement palaces that featured prominently in the successful television series »Babylon Berlin«!
With the title song »Zu Asche, zu Staub« from the hit series »Babylon Berlin«
Nikko Weidemann and Mario Kamien are familiar names in the music business, but taking on responsibility for the entire soundtrack for Babylon Berlin was new territory even for them. Directors Tom Tykwer, Henk Handloetgen and Achim von Borries entrust them with the task of composing all kinds of pieces, from blues and piano ragtime to chansons and the flamboyant big band Charleston number. Especially in the title song »Zu Asche, zu Staub« (To Ashes, To Dust), the aim was more to convey a sense of vitality transferable to the modern day rather than to focus on historical accuracy. The concert premiere of the Moka Efti Orchestra was celebrated in May 2018 at the »XJAZZ Festival Berlin«. In September 2018, the orchestra played a highly acclaimed show at the Große Freiheit venue in Hamburg’s St. Pauli district as part of the Reeperbahn Festival and will tour other cities in Germany in 2019.
