Time has told me – songs by Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen and Joel Frederiksen in the form of chansons from the English and French Renaissance

Joel Frederiksen is a singer and lutenist who, along with opera, is passionate about early music. He was first inspired to link Renaissance music with contemporary singer-songwriters by a VW commercial in 1999. His passion paid off in 2013 with the album »Requiem for a Pink Moon«, which won him the ECHO Klassik award. He established his Ensemble Phoenix Munich in 2003 and the group has performed at the Bavarian National Museum since 2007 under the title »Between Mars and Venus«.

His latest offering »Time has told me« includes further songs by Nick Drake and links them thematically with the English Renaissance composer John Dowland. Pieces by Leonard Cohen are interwoven with French chansons from the Renaissance. Cohen’s »Suzanne« is paired with »Susanne un jour« by Orlande de Lassus and »Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye« with Josquin des Prez’s »Adieu mes amours«, all with new arrangements. Finally, Joel Frederiksen will use songs that he has composed recently on classic themes including love, loss and change to express his thoughts about the past, present and future.
