Conductor: Alan Gilbert
In its 70-year history, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra has been led and advanced by such greats as Günter Wand, Herbert Blomstedt and Christoph von Dohnányi – a total of ten principal conductors in all. This summer, Thomas Hengelbrock will be succeeded by the US American Alan Gilbert. His choice is a perfect match for the concert hall that has given the orchestra its name. Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie is not only a perfect residence, it is also an icon, says Gilbert, who most recently fronted the New York Philharmonic. Together with the musicians, whose extreme flexibility he had already come to appreciate as principal guest conductor from 2004 to 2015, he was able to realise his vision of an orchestra of the 21st century.
