Talk and film screening by Klaus Kalchschmid
First, the sterling studio film adaptation from the 1978 Zurich Harnoncourt/Ponnelle production in the original Italian and then, 35 years later: live from the Komische Oper Berlin, the modern German adaptation is presented in a new orchestration by Elena Kats-Chemin, including incredibly vibrant dance scenes: The contrasts between an artfully aesthetic, exaggerated opera-museum on one hand, and a boundlessly sensual, contemporary realisation on the other could not be greater. The two versions of Monteverdi’s opera about the Thracian singer are juxtaposed in full length.
Conductors: Nicholas Harnoncourt/André de Ridder
Stagings: Jean-Pierre Ponnelle/Barrie Kosky
Soloists: Philippe Huttenlochner, Trudekiese Schmidt, Roland Hermann, Francisco Ariaza, Christian Boesch, Dominik Köninger, Julia Novikova and others.
Studio 1978, 100 min., followed by Berlin 2012, 110 min.
