Serenely and with composure, Riccardo Chailly devotes himself to works and their interpretation, playing them, forming them in their entirety and their smallest details alike. Equally far-sighted were the Italian conductor’s chosen places of work: After his assistance with Claudio Abbado at the Scala in Milan, he joined the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin before a 16-year stay at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam.
Chailly has also been active with the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester for eleven years, when he sprang the surprise news that from 2015 he wanted to succeed the late Abbado at the »Teatro alla Scala«. »I am from Milan. My father worked there and I have been inhaling opera there since my earliest childhood. Our family lives here. How could I not?« he retrospectively confessed in an interview. Unlikely, then, that he will return to Germany any time soon. Fortunately, we can always look forward to guest appearances with the Filarmonica della Scala to experience one of the great conductors and Beethoven interpreters of our time.
