About the piece

Giselle is considered the archetype of romantic ballet: the apex of an era in which magical creatures, spirits and fairies populated the stage and in which the ideal image of the ballerina that endures to this day – floating on lace in a delicate tutu – was born. First performed in Paris in 1841 under the title »Giselle ou Les Wilis«, the work continues to hold its place as one of the most successful ballets of all times, offering the audience the epitome of romantic ballet with its second »white act«, flawless technique, strictly geometric forms of the corps de ballet and seemingly weightless dancers.
The Wilis from the work’s original title are the spirits of young maidens who died after being betrayed by their lovers. As the desire to dance continues to beat in the maidens’ now dead hearts, their spirits leave their graves at night to dance at crossroads. If they get hold of a living person, they dance with him until he drops dead of exhaustion. To this day, Giselle is one of the most sought-after roles for classical ballerinas.
