About the piece
The Nutcracker is Tchaikovsky’s last and most successful work.
Its plot is based on the German romanticist E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story »The Nutcracker and the Mouse King«. The story of a young girl who receives a nutcracker for Christmas and dreams that it turns into a prince captures the imagination of young and old throughout the world. For a few hours, the audience is whisked away from everyday life and into the romantic and imaginative world of dreams and desires. After the Christmas guests have left, Clara goes to her presents one more time and falls asleep there. At midnight, nutcrackers and dolls come to life and Clara finds herself transported to a magical world. Snowflakes and dancing flowers accompany the girl on her journey to the realm of the beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy. An enchanting Christmas fairy tale that delights young and old ballet fans alike with every performance.
»The Nutcracker« ballet had its world premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg in December 1892.
