Pilsen Philharmonic Orchestra
Conductor: Ludwig Wicki
The life story of Empress Elisabeth, better known as Sissi, has been a source of fascination for generations. With her elaborately plaited hairstyles adorned with white flowers, she is still today an ideal of beauty and a feminine icon. In Ernst Marischka’s Austrian historical film, she was portrayed by the refreshing Romy Schneider. It is not at all surprising that the legendary actress moves us as Sissi then as now: both women won the hearts of millions, had to deal with fame at a young age, and both had to fight for their space away from the public eye.
Ludwig Wicki and the Pilsen Philharmonic Orchestra recreate the splendour of the 1955 classic film as it plays on the big screen of the Philharmonic. Against the magnificent backdrop of the Viennese Hapsburg monarchy, and accompanied by the nostalgic strains of Anton Profes’s score, the incomparable Romy Schneider as Sissi and Karlheinz Böhm as the gallant Emperor Franz Josef find love against all odds.
