»Congo does not exist. It is just a river and a large forest.« Congo first had to be invented, according to Éric Vuillard in his novel of the same name. The Belgian King Leopold II wants a colony all to himself, a country as a private corporation. After the Berlin Congo Conference in 1884, governors, commissioners and enforcers get to work. The internationally celebrated Congolese choreographer and director Faustin Linyekula has worked on Vuillard’s text, mixing words, movements and songs from the Equateur forest. In this chorus work, Linyekula himself appears on stage as a dancer alongside actor Kamono Moanda and the singer Pasco Losanganya in a woodcut-like setting of light and shadow. The dark and beautiful journey culminates in the question: How can we speak, dance or even just stay on our feet in the face of the atrocities of the past?
