Stephen Waarts, viola
Conducted by Theodore Kuchar
Stephen Waarts can no longer be announced as an insider tip: The young violinist has already made too much of a name for himself in recent years, be it on sensational debuts back home in the United States or as a holder of the 2017 Avery Fisher Career Grant.
When Waarts left the Curtis Institute of Music Philadelphia three years ago to study at the Kronberg Academy in Germany, invitations followed in quick succession: from the Munich Symphony Orchestra, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin and the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
US media like to compare the 23-year-old with the young Yehudi Menuhin, emphasising the intelligence and joy apparent in his interpretations as well as his colourful, velvety tone. Waarts himself names Oistrach and Heifetz as role models, because »the two had their very own personal style«. Today, young artists are often solely concerned with pleasing the competition juries or fulfilling the composers’ specifications as closely as possible – without developing their own attitude and powers of persuasion. Not so the tall up-and-coming star, as the reviews of his recently released debut CD once again demonstrate.
