West-Eastern Divan Orchestra
Conductor: Daniel Barenboim Thomas Guggeis

Please note:

Legendary pianist, conductor and co-founder of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra Daniel Barenboim has recently been diagnosed with an inflammatory vascular disease. He is currently undergoing in-patient treatment and thus has to withdraw at short notice from the orchestra's European tour, which has been planned for months. The attending physicians expect a full recovery, but strongly advised Barenboim to complete his current treatment and withdraw from the upcoming concert tour in order to focus on his recovery.

He will be replaced by conductor Thomas Guggeis, who, despite his young years, already has an intensive working relationship with Daniel Barenboim. He has been Staatskapellmeister at the Berlin State Opera »Unter den Linden« since the 2020/21 season, and from the 2023/24 season he will take up the post of General Music Director of the Frankfurt Opera. Before taking up his post in Frankfurt, Thomas Guggeis will conduct at houses such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Semperoper in Dresden and the Vienna State Opera. He has made successful debuts on the concert platform with a number of renowned orchestras, including the Orchestre de Paris, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Staatskapelle Berlin.

Daniel Barenboim says: »The withdrawal from this tour is painful for me. My work with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is very special to me, and I was very much looking forward to performing Smetana's Má vlast (My Fatherland) together. However, I must now give priority to my health. I am grateful that Thomas Guggeis has agreed to take over the tour. The fact that the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, which still has no home, will perform this work in numerous European cities is very significant and symbolic. I am very happy that the tour is taking place and will be with all the musicians in spirit.«

The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is made up of young Israeli and Arab musicians who come together each year for a period of rehearsal to embark on an international concert tour together. Their common goal is to build bridges, to promote musical-human dialogue across national borders and to convey tolerance and respect - a desire that deserves great support, especially in these politically difficult times. This year's tour takes the WEDO right across Europe - besides Munich also to Paris, Milan, Brussels and Luxembourg and culminates in the eagerly awaited concerts at the opening of the Prague Spring Festival.

The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra has only performed at MünchenMusik once before, ten years ago in July 2012, which makes the concert experience on 8 May in the new Isarphilharmonie something very special. Customers who own concert tickets and wish to return them are requested to send back the original tickets before the concert. In the case of Print@home tickets, please write by e-mail to tickets@muenchenmusik.de. If you purchased your tickets at München Ticket or an affiliated advance booking office, you can obtain further information online at muenchenticket.de/tickets/Kartenrueckgabe. Tickets presented at the entrance to the concert will be validated.

An orchestra that build bridges

Listening to each other – a goal that Daniel Barenboim and the members of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra have achieved. Every year, they come together to rehearse new works before embarking on an international concert tour. An orchestra composed of young Israeli and Arab musicians, all marked by the political circumstances and convictions that prevail in their home countries and yet open to both musical and human dialogue. That the orchestra builds bridges and fosters mutual respect is a great wish in a politically difficult time that has become reality at least for many member of this extraordinary formation.

Since it was founded in 1999, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra has performed in most European countries, in America and in the  Middle East. Together with its founder Daniel Barenboim, it will come to Munich in the spring of 2022. Barenboim has moved the world as pianist, conductor and human being and played his way into the hearts of multiple generations over many decades. Expect original soundscapes and unparalleled joie de vivre from this constellation as the orchestra captures Bohemia's rich cultural and scenic world in Bedřich Smetana's symphonic cycle »Má Vlast« in a multifarious, majestic stream of sound.
