There is light at the end of the tunnel: The latest decision from the Bavarian Council of Ministers has extended the click & collect scheme to cover libraries as well, so they are finally allowed to issue books, films, games and much more again.

Originally planned for March 2021, the Music Day, much loved by children and young people, had to be postponed on account of the pandemic this year. As soon as an alternative date can be agreed, we will let you know.

The current corona measures apply until March 7th. This means that, until further notice, no live events can take place in the Gasteig. München Ticket sales on site as well as the Munich City Library will remain closed. The Library offers a Click & Collect Service.

Since the topping-out ceremony in October, a lot has happened at Gasteig Sendling: Increasingly, the shell of the Interim Philharmonic Hall is looking like a concert hall. But before the opening concert, scheduled for autumn 2021, the property at Hans-Preißinger-Straße will witness plenty of further change and development. Munich-based architecture office Henn has produced a video to demonstrate their vision of the future Gasteig. With its transparent, open architecture, the renovated and remodelled Gasteig aims to gain worldwide recognition as »Munich’s pulsating cultural heart«. This video tour is based on a 3D model of the New Gasteig. It was generated using the BIM (Building Information Modelling) method, which digitally records and models all relevant building data to help improve the planning process.

On 17 November, in the dark of night, a crane hoisted the Shelter for the »Türmer München« performance onto the Gasteig’s roof. Made of wood and steel and weighing six tonnes, the temporary structure will provide Munich’s Vigils with a memorable hour high above the city – twice each day for a whole year, starting on 12 December 2020.

From 2 November to, as things stand, 30 November, the Bavarian State Government has once again ordered the closure of all stages. Following the joint open letter from their executive directors to prime minister Markus Söder, the stages are now once again joining forces to make a stand.

Starting Monday, 2. November, stricter Covid-19 containment rules apply nationwide until and including 30 November. No events can take place in the Gasteig during this period. The Munich City Library will remain open and most of the courses offered by the Münchner Volkshochschule adult education centre will continue to take place. At the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, the practice rooms remain available to students for use under strict conditions.

Since 1 November 2020, the Münchner Volkshochschule adult education centre (MVHS) has a new Managing Director. Dr. Martin Ecker succeeds Prof. Dr. Klaus Meisel, who is retiring after more than 14 years as MVHS Managing Director.

Eight months after construction of the new Philharmonic Hall in the south of Munich began, the topping-out ceremony was held today on the grounds of the future Gasteig Sendling. This tradition celebrates the completion of a building’s shell, and that of the interim Philharmonic Hall was successfully finished on schedule and on budget despite corona. Gasteig Sendling is scheduled to open in autumn 2021.

The Bavarian State Government’s pilot project to increase the number of visitors at cultural events is being extended. This means that the Philharmonic Hall in the Gasteig will, for the time being, provisionally be able to accommodate up to 500 visitors in designated seats until November 1st.

Before the renovation of the Gasteig can begin, the building in Rosenheimer Straße must be cleared. The stack room of the Munich City Library in the Gasteig is no exception: Since the end of August, three van loads of books a day have been making their way to a former printing works in Oberschleißheim. During the move, some titles may be temporarily unavailable.

On 1 October 2020, the cellist and chamber musician will take on a professorship for string chamber music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich (HMTM). The cellist of the renowned »Quatuor Ébène« sets a new focus on chamber music and artistic instrumental training.

For the first time, all of Munich is celebrating »Summer in the City«, with art and culture, sports and fun, rides and stalls at numerous locations throughout the city. Kids and adults alike will be able to take advantage of the free open-air programme in front of the Gasteig: many concerts, special appearances by the Munich Philharmonic and even a sports arena under an open sky are planned.

This year, Mini-München – Munich’s biggest summer holiday event – takes place throughout the city. The Munich City Library in the Gasteig is also taking part: From 27 July to 14 August 2020, children and young people can play at being publishers, animation studio, cinema and reading lounge here.

After a long corona break, the Münchner Volkshochschule adult education centre will resume its courses in the Gasteig and other locations on 1 July. From 18 July, the annual »Sommer Volkshochschule« is set to provide an exciting and varied holiday programme on your doorstep with around 1000 courses.

Unfortunately, the 2020 ARD International Music Competition cannot take place this year. Due to the corona pandemic, the 69th edition with the planned categories of flute, trombone, string quartet and piano has been postponed to 2022.

The Munich Philharmonic and the Bayerischer Rundfunk ensembles have announced the early end of their 2019/20 concert season. Due to the implemented corona pandemic containment measures and the associated bans on events, the concerts still planned up to and including 7 July 2020 had to be cancelled.

The US-American artist Benjy Barnhart has had his studio at the future site of the Gasteig at Sendling in Hans-Preißinger-Straße 8 (HP8) since 2011. Normally, the Munich Philharmonic meets in the Gasteig almost every day. Cellist Stephan Haack even refers to the Philharmonic Hall as his »living room«. But the Coronavirus has changed all that: Joint rehearsals and concerts have been suspended and for the time being the orchestra members cannot have personal contact with each other or with their audience. Instead, they now give private sessions to enjoy at home.
