Gasteig Sendling – Photo Art in Episodes (3)

Gasteig Sendling – Photo Art in Episodes (3) Kathrin Bild photographs varied scenes of Gasteig Sendling Gérard Pleynet

They arrived even before the first excavator: several amateur photographers who have been documenting the Sendling site ever since construction work began there. They are participants in a long-term photographic project of the Münchner Volkshochschule community college. In a public exhibition consisting of several episodes, we will present a selection of their photographs to date.

Concrete instead of curtains! For photographer Kathrin Bild, the Gasteig Sendling site is already like a stage: day and night, exciting scenes take place in front of the varied backdrops of the construction site, just asking to be photographed. Where spotlights will one day light up the stage, utilitarian safety lamps are currently illuminating the building site. The cast includes security guards, architects, drillers and excavator drivers. The storyline: transformation of the utility company’s site into a vibrant cultural meeting place.

»Just like a stage, the interim site is currently in a state of constant flux; the scenery is constantly being changed and renewed. The demolitions of buildings made for especially spectacular scenes, but even after that there were always backdrops that appealed to me.«

At the end of 2021, Gasteig Sendling’s several stages will play host to many wonderful artists and creative minds; in Kathrin Bild’s photographs, the lead role is assumed by the Gasteig’s entire interim quarter. The mathematician already took an interest in art and painted and drew as a child. About five years ago, she took up photography. Seeing the cityscape change with time holds a particular fascination for Kathrin Bild. This is also the reason that she decided to take part in the long-term photo project at the Münchner Volkshochschule community college, always keeping an eye on the transformation of the Sendling site.

»I liked the site in its original state, before the construction work, with its many small huts and barracks that are now gone. But I’m already curious about what it will look like later on, in its completed state. The area will probably lose some of its romantic-decay appeal, but many more people will come here and many more events and performances will take place.«

Background
The project »Interim – der Gasteig kommt nach Sendling« is a special cooperation between the Münchner Volkshochschule and Gasteig München GmbH on the occasion of the relocation of the Gasteig to Sendling in 2021. The »Photography & Video/Film« faculty of the Münchner Volkshochschule has developed this course in close cooperation with the photographer and lecturer Gérard Pleynet. »I have a very close affinity to the Gasteig. For me, it is a place of art and intellectual life, and I also work here. That’s why I am interested in documenting changes in time and space throughout its relocation and the renovation work,« emphasizes Pleynet, who supervises the interim project with unparalleled dedication and but aims to create a photographic record of the Gasteig’s renovation.

Under his supervision, several photographers have been documenting the changes in the Gasteig’s interim quarters from as early as March 2019 – always with an artist’s eye on the construction work. Like Kathrin Bild, all course participants have developed their own concepts, perspectives and artistic ideas.
