Topping-Out Ceremony at the New Cultural Powerhouse

Topping-Out Ceremony at the New Cultural Powerhouse Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter, Mayor Katrin Habenschaden and Gasteig Managing Director Max Wagner Robert Haas

Eight months after construction of the new Philharmonic Hall in the south of Munich began, the topping-out ceremony was held today on the grounds of the future Gasteig Sendling. This tradition celebrates the completion of a building’s shell, and that of the interim Philharmonic Hall was successfully finished on schedule and on budget despite corona. Gasteig Sendling is scheduled to open in autumn 2021.

»Especially in these times, it important to send a clear message in support of art and culture. That is why today’s topping-out ceremony is a good day in many respects. I’m sure we’re going to see a great building. Congratulations to all those involved. Respect!« said Munich’s Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter in his topping-out speech.

The event was held to celebrate the successful completion of the structural work on the new interim Philharmonic Hall. Now completed, the steel structure will, over the coming months, be expanded into a modern concert hall with a room volume of almost 60,000 cubic metres. This will include an 1800-seat concert hall made of prefabricated solid wood elements fitted into the shell. The Philharmonic Hall at Gasteig Sendling is being built by the general contractor Nüssli to the plans of architects gmp – Gerkan, Marg und Partner. Nagata Acoustics International, the company of renowned acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota, is responsible for the new hall’s acoustics.

»We want to turn Gasteig Sendling into a cultural powerhouse. Today, we have reached an important milestone along this path,« says Gasteig Managing Director Max Wagner. The Munich Philharmonic is scheduled to give its first concert in the new auditorium in autumn 2021. From then on, the Gasteig and all the various institutions it houses will gradually move to the interim quarter in Sendling, after which the renovation of the Gasteig in Haidhausen will commence at full speed.

After the traditional topping-out ceremony and the building’s formal inauguration, Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter, Mayoress and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Gasteig München GmbH Katrin Habenschaden, Andy Böckli from the Nüssli Group, Annette Löber from gmp and Max Wagner symbolically drove the last nails into the wood. Following the ceremony, the guests visited the stage in the shell of the interim Philharmonic Hall.
