Helping with Small Gifts, with the Wish Tree in the Library in Gasteig HP8

Helping with Small Gifts, with the Wish Tree in the Library in Gasteig HP8 Kathrin Metzner / GMG

The second floor of the new city library in HP8 is currently home to a Christmas wish tree. Hung with stars, each of which contains a wish from a needy person in Munich, it invites anyone wanting to do a good deed to pick a star, get the gift that is written on it and bring it to the library by 16 December.

The joint initiative by the Malteser aid organisation and Munich City Library, now in its second year, aims to bring joy to people in need at Christmas by collecting as many gifts as possible. In addition to Gasteig HP8, there are further wishing trees in the city libraries in Fürstenried, Giesing, Hasenbergl, Isarvorstadt, Neuhausen and Sendling. Anyone, whether library member or not, can take a wish from the tree and fulfil it.

This year’s aim is to fulfil around 1500 wishes from children and adults in need. You can bring your gifts to the respective city library until 16 December, from where they will be delivered before Christmas. Gifts will go to Münchenstift, the homeless charity Karla 51, the Munich orphanage and Lichtblick Hasenbergl, among others.

»Enabling community and solidarity is ingrained in the Munich City Library’s philosophy. (…)
We are pleased that Munich’s public libraries and especially their customers can play a part in fulfilling so many wishes at this festive time of year.
By picking a wish star, you are giving a fellow human being a special Christmas surprise!«

Peter Becker, Director of Munich City Library

The wish tree campaign has already been running since 12 November. Christmas gifts can still be handed in at the respective library until Thursday, 16 December. You can find further information at the websites of the Malteser and the Munich City Library (in German language).
