ARD Music Competition Postponed to 2022

ARD Music Competition Postponed to 2022 ARD International Music Competition Munich

Unfortunately, the 2020 ARD International Music Competition cannot take place this year. Due to the corona pandemic, the 69th edition with the planned categories of flute, trombone, string quartet and piano has been postponed to 2022.

The 69th ARD International Music Competition, originally planned for 31 August to 18 September 2020 with the competition categories of flute, trombone, string quartet and piano, has been postponed to the competition’s 71st edition from 29 August to 16 September 2022. As a one-off special rule, applicants for this year’s competition can register for the 2022 event even if they have already exceeded the age limit by that time. In 2021, the ARD Music Competition is expected to take place as planned with the categories piano duo, voice, horn and violin.

»It is now clear that the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic makes it impossible to carry out a sensible, and above all fair competition in the usual manner. Despite extending the application deadline twice already, we have accepted that we cannot stage the competition this year. At this stage in time, it is impossible to gauge whether, at the end of August, the candidates and jury members would be able to travel – and in view of the very nature of this international competition, with competitors from many countries on four continents, this is an absolute prerequisite. When it comes to the organization of this event, the world's largest classical music competition in 21 alternating categories, there are just too many imponderables«, the competition's artistic management explained.

The competition, one of the most prestigious and largest of its kind in the world, is held annually on various stages in Munich, including the Gasteig. You can find further information about the competition and this year’s cancellation on the website of the ARD Music Competition.
