Culture meets shopping: The library in Gasteig Motorama opens on 26 Nov
A rainbow of colour!
Planning a library in the middle of a shopping centre: Clemens Bachmann, founder of CBA Clemens Bachmann Architekten realised it wouldn't be easy and accepted the challenge. In an interview, he tells us how, with unconventional ideas and creative approaches, he and his team created a »space for all« in Munich.
What are the special architectural features of the lobrary at Motorama?
The minute you enter the Motorama, you find yourself right inside the library. Where there used to be shops, there is now a room for youngsters, a room for learning, for gaming, etc. Visitors reach the individual areas via the corridor, which is accessible to all. The city library will add a rainbow of colour to the shopping centre, as each room will have a different colour scheme: The children's area, for example, will have a red theme, the programme area yellow. As well as immersing visitors in worlds of colour, this also provides orientation, helping people find their way around the library.
What do you think it will be like spending time in the City Library at Motorama?
It will be an inspiring and precious experience. We envision the public library becoming the promenade of the Motorama. People from all walks of life will meet there. The Open Library will have longer opening times than before, from 7 AM to 11 PM. We also see the interim library as an experiment: The spaces are dynamic and will be allowed to change, depending on what the public wants. We are looking forward to the reactions! CBA's office is located on the ground of Gasteig HP8, just a few steps away from the City Library in Hall E and the Isarphilharmonie.
Update Opening Weekend - please note!
In view of the current infection situation and the rules currently in force, the library has decided to cancel the events that were planned during the opening weekend at the Motorama. We ask for your understanding for this decision.
However, as it is important to open the place to the public and to be there for the people of Munich, especially during these times, the municipal library in the Motorama will open its doors for normal operations on Friday at 10:00 am. Verena Dietl, Munich's 3rd mayor, and other guests will welcome the customers before everyone is invited to explore the premises, get a whiff of new library air and borrow their first media.
Admission is permitted to visitors who have been vaccinated, have recovered or are not yet twelve years and three months old. Opening hours are: Friday 10:00 to 22:00, Saturday 7:00 to 22:00, Sunday 7:00 to 22:00.
