Gasteig Sendling – Photo Art in Episodes (2)
Sunlight, time and beer cans – the three things that are indispensable to Andreas Weimann for his pictures of Gasteig Sendling. The experienced amateur photographer, who learned analogue photography and development in his school’s own darkroom at the age of fifteen, likes to experiment with all manner of technical aids. With double exposure, night shots or the creative use of handmade paper, Weimann creates extraordinary images; for special techniques he even builds his own cameras. For an elaborate series of photos of the Gasteig construction site, Andreas Weimann converted several empty beer cans into special cameras and positioned these at various places on site. With them, he hopes to take photos that show the changes taking place on the site:
»The basic idea behind using the beer can cameras is solargraphy. I have made small holes in empty beer cans and loaded them with light-sensitive photographic paper. The photo then becomes visible only through its mere exposure over time – from a few weeks to up to six months. If, for example, a house is demolished while the camera is exposing, my hope is that both the house and the gap in the building that is later erected can be seen superimposed on the photo.«
While furthering his photographic knowledge in several courses at the Münchner Volkshochschule community college in recent years, Andreas Weimann found out about the unique long-term project to document the Gasteig’s move to Sendling. As part of this project, he also took photographs for his other series, »Baumosaik«, which consists of several shots of slightly different locations that were then assembled into a single picture using a computer program. Weimann deliberately leaves the transitions between the photos visible: the visual breaks are intended to remind us of the upheavals on the site and the changes to the buildings over time.
The project »Interim – der Gasteig kommt nach Sendling« is a special cooperation between the Münchner Volkshochschule and Gasteig München GmbH on the occasion of the relocation of the Gasteig to Sendling in 2021. The »Photography & Video/Film« faculty of the Münchner Volkshochschule has developed this course in close cooperation with the photographer and lecturer Gérard Pleynet. »I have a very close affinity to the Gasteig. For me, it is a place of art and intellectual life, and I also work here. That’s why I am interested in documenting changes in time and space throughout its relocation and the renovation work,« emphasizes Pleynet, who supervises the interim project with unparalleled dedication and but aims to create a photographic record of the Gasteig’s renovation.
Under his supervision, several photographers have been documenting the changes in the Gasteig’s interim quarters from as early as March 2019 – always with an artist’s eye on the construction work. Like Andreas Weimann, all course participants have developed their own concepts, perspectives and artistic ideas.
