Gasteig Sendling – Photo Art in Episodes (5)

Gasteig Sendling – Photo Art in Episodes (5) Maximilian Allwein is looking for characters on the deserted Gasteig Sendling site. Gérard Pleynet

They arrived even before the first excavator: several amateur photographers who have been documenting the Sendling site ever since construction work began there. They are participants in a long-term photographic project of the Münchner Volkshochschule community college. In a public exhibition consisting of several episodes, we will present a selection of their photographs to date.

Maximilian Allwein has a photographic penchant for people. The graduated economist began taking analogue photographs as a secondary school student, his preferred subjects being portraits and nude photography. With more than 6000 visitors a day, a place like the Gasteig is an inexhaustible source of new motifs for the amateur photographer.

»I am a Gasteig regular myself and like to visit the City Library, watch concerts and take courses at the Volkshochschule, and I have also eaten and danced at the Gasteig many times. I am very pleased to be able to explore and document the new Gasteig location in depth. I find it particularly exciting to observe the nascent symbiosis between the creative enterprises next door and the Gasteig.«

As long the Gasteig’s interim quarter in Sendling is still a construction site, it is closed to the public for safety reasons, and access to unauthorized persons is prohibited. Maximilian Allwein is using the photo project of the Münchner Volkshochschule adult education centre as an opportunity to renew his own focus. On the building site, he searches for characters, for human-like structures in the deserted space. Instead of people, objects and perspectives now take centre stage in his portraits. Allwein’s photographs show the Gasteig construction site reflected in the windows and premises of the local creative businesses. In his photos, the Gasteig and its soon-to-be neighbours already form a mutually inspiring whole.

Background
The project »Interim – der Gasteig kommt nach Sendling« is a special cooperation between the Münchner Volkshochschule and Gasteig München GmbH on the occasion of the relocation of the Gasteig to Sendling in 2021. The »Photography & Video/Film« faculty of the Münchner Volkshochschule has developed this course in close cooperation with the photographer and lecturer Gérard Pleynet. »I have a very close affinity to the Gasteig. For me, it is a place of art and intellectual life, and I also work here. That’s why I am interested in documenting changes in time and space throughout its relocation and the renovation work,« emphasizes Pleynet, who supervises the interim project with unparalleled dedication and but aims to create a photographic record of the Gasteig’s renovation.

Under his supervision, several photographers have been documenting the changes in the Gasteig’s interim quarters from as early as March 2019 – always with an artist’s eye on the construction work. Like Maximilian Allwein, all course participants have developed their own concepts, perspectives and artistic ideas.
