Gasteig Sendling – Photo Art in Episodes (9)
A qualified bookseller, Sarah Seifert revels in the images and stories that arise in her head when she reads. Camera in hand, she roams the Gasteig construction site in search of her own stories. Her images tell of change, her lead roles include wheelbarrows, shovels, rooms. Living in Sendling for 30 years, Sarah Seifert is witnessing intriguing transformations here, among them the building work on Hans-Preißinger-Straße, where Gasteig’s temporary home is taking shape. To her, the site is a treasure trove of material for her photo-essays.
»The twisted, used building materials, the walls – crumbling, piles of rubble. Then the new beginning: a scaffold appears, a new window in time. There will be another in-between, another bygone times and, eventually, another demolition. What I am interested in is the change: forever the same materials – steel, brick, concrete, plastic, rubber – assembled in different ways, with different architecture, different stories. Yet again, the use of this material is impermanent.«

The project »Interim – der Gasteig kommt nach Sendling« is a special cooperation between the Münchner Volkshochschule and Gasteig München GmbH on the occasion of the relocation of the Gasteig to Sendling in 2021. The »Photography & Video/Film« faculty of the Münchner Volkshochschule has developed this course in close cooperation with the photographer and lecturer Gérard Pleynet. »I have a very close affinity to the Gasteig. For me, it is a place of art and intellectual life, and I also work here. That’s why I am interested in documenting changes in time and space throughout its relocation and the renovation work,« emphasizes Pleynet, who supervises the interim project with unparalleled dedication and but aims to create a photographic record of the Gasteig’s renovation.
Under his supervision, several photographers have been documenting the changes in the Gasteig’s interim quarters from as early as March 2019 – always with an artist’s eye on the construction work. Like Sarah Seifert, all course participants have developed their own concepts, perspectives and artistic ideas.
