Munich Philharmonic and Bayerischer Rundfunk Announce Early End of Season
»It is with deep regret that the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra has to cancel its subscription concerts for the remainder of the 19/20 season,« states the Munich Philharmonic’s website. »The concert cancellations apply to the announced concerts up to and including 7 July 2020. (…) Should concerts and music education programmes be possible on a smaller scale and with a reduced audience following a relaxation of measures by the Bavarian government, the Munich Philharmonic would like to return to the stage at the Gasteig as soon as possible.« As Paul Müller, Executive Director of the Munich Philharmonic, admits, »this step hurts, but is, in the end, only logical. Now all those involved can reliably plan ahead, above all our audience, which has so far been very patient and understanding. We are prepared for various alternative performance formats and hope to finally be able to play again – better today than tomorrow.«
The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra writes on its homepage about the premature season’s end: »Against the background of continuing prohibitions and restrictions affecting rehearsal and concert operations with orchestras and choirs, the Bayerischer Rundfunk is forced to cancel all remaining concerts for the 2019/20 season. The musica viva concert series will also end prematurely. A decision to cancel or reschedule the concert »Klassik am Odeonsplatz« on July 10, 2020 has not yet been reached (...) Until the end of the season, the BR will make use of all options to nevertheless allow its ensembles to perform in its programmes and in alternative event and music education formats as far as is possible under legal constraints. Although rehearsals are already taking place, in compliance with all distancing and hygiene rules, this is currently possible only for smaller ensembles.«
As a special season finale in times of corona, the BR ensembles will give a virtual joint concert on 24 May 2020. You can find more about this on the BR Classic website (in German language).

The Gasteig keeps its fingers crossed for a regular start to the 2020/21 season in September!
