New! The »Wavelab« Innovation Lab at the HMTM

In response to the transition towards digital media, the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich (HMTM) will launch Germany’s first »Wavelab« in November 2020 – an innovation laboratory and start-up centre for music, arts, media and new technologies.

In November, »Wavelab« will take up operations at the university’s Institute for Cultural Management and Media. The innovation lab is aimed at students and graduates in the fields of music, art, performing arts, film and media as well as new technologies. The institute’s director and Wavelab initiator, Prof. Maurice Lausberg, and initiator explains: »With Wavelab, we have established a lead project that has no equal in Germany. (…) We are convinced that the use of new technologies in art, culture and entertainment holds great potential for creative, innovative and disruptive business ideas that make our lives more diverse, exciting and beautiful.«

The aim of Wavelab is to stimulate business start-ups and accompany them with workshops, coaching and mentoring. The focus is on technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), data sciences and the Internet of Things (IoT). Prof. Dr. Bernd Redmann, President of the HMTM, comments: »With the new study programme of the Institute for Cultural Management and Media, we are the only German university of arts to already offer a cultural management course with a focus on cultural entrepreneurship. Several successful start-ups have already emerged from this course. The HMTM now wants to continue along this path with Wavelab to become the hub of cultural entrepreneurship.«

At the Wave Innovation Days on 20 and 21 November 2020, workshops on the topic of »How can we succeed in moving the live concert experience into digital space?« will be held. An online press conference is scheduled for 26.11. Starting in 2021, start-ups will be supported with office space, coaching and access to Wavelab’s network of investors and experts to take their business idea to the next level. Students and others in the cultural and creative industries will also have access to open cooperative events and networking formats.
