The Münchner Volkshochschule (MVHS) registers more than 200,000 bookings per year for 13,000 events with more than 169,000 double lessons. This offer of more than 50 foreign languages and a total of 30,000 participants mirrors Munich’s international image as a cosmopolitan city.
A contribution to integration
The MVHS provides an essential service to integration: Every year 20,000 people study German as a foreign language. Many hundreds of (young) adults complete their basic education and school certificates or take advantage of the broad range of vocational and further education. The health education programme is attended by more than 25,000 citizens year by year.
The Münchner Volkshochschule conveys new scientific and research-related insights to the public. Lectures and courses are intended to encourage cultural participation and contribution and highlight Munich's cultural treasures. The education programme for senior citizens alone has more than 10,000 participants per year. The courses offered by the Junge Volkshochschule (Youth College) are visited by around 1,200 youths and young adults per year.
The Offene Akademie
Alongside the established courses, the MVHS has been inviting well-known lecturers and artists for more than 20 years as part of its Offene Akademie (Open Academy). This provides an open and sophisticated programme. As a forum for knowledge transfer and public discussion at the junction of science, culture, politics and the Munich public, the Offene Akademie introduces topics of public interest and puts them up for discussion.
The Aspekte Galerie
The MVHS Aspekte Galerie (Aspekte Gallery) offers an experimental forum for contemporary art and sees itself as a platform for cultural discourse focussing on socio-political questions. The thematic exhibition projects relate to the written programme of the Offene Akademie and are accompanied by lectures, panel discussions, symposiums, readings and film presentations.
The Aspekte Galerie is located on the 2nd and 3rd floors and is open Monday to Sunday from 10 AM to 10 PM. Entrance is free.
