The Long Night of Music on 7 May will see impressive women delivering powerful performances on three stages at Gasteig HP8. They include the band Lauraine fronted by musician Laura Glauber, who takes centre stage along with her prosthetic leg. The MVHS Munich adult education centre supports refugees from Ukraine with free German courses and operates a multilingual refugee advice hotline. The first courses have already started and the offer is constantly being expanded.

Why Buy When You Can Borrow? Tools For Creative Projects at the Gasteig
Whether you’re planning a creative project to keep you busy during the cold winter months or want to make that special Christmas present for a loved one, it’s worth paying the Tool Library at the Gasteig a visit. Every Tuesday and Saturday, for a modest fee, you can borrow a variety of tools in the shop at the Gasteig Forum – from soldering irons to 3D printers.

While the Gasteig is being renovated, the Munich City Library will be housed in Gasteig HP8 and Gasteig Motorama, right opposite the Haidhausen site. The main focal points at this interim location are Family, Gaming and Digital Learning.

Along with the Gasteig, a large part of Munich’s municipal library has also moved to Sendling. In the listed Hall E, visitors will find inspiration daily from 7 AM to 11 PM, because, spurred on by the move, the library has repositioned itself: The Open Library in the Gasteig HP8 offers space for compelling experiments. The grand opening will be celebrated from 19 to 21 November.

With a speech by Munich's Lord Mayor and a festive concert by the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra with Valery Gergiev and star pianist Daniil Trifonov, the Gasteig HP8 cultural area and the new Isarphilharmonie were ceremoniously opened on 8 October.

Now that the initial acoustic trials by the Munich Philharmonic in the new Isarphilharmonie are complete, everyone involved is full of enthusiasm. Star acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota, who had flown in from Japan for the tests, was also on site at Gasteig HP8. The official opening of the Isarphilharmonie in Sendling is on 8 October.

The construction work at Gasteig HP8 are in their final phase. Hall E, Hall X and the Isarphilharmonie in Sendling will open as early as 8 October. All Gasteig institutes will move into their new quarters in several stages until finally, in March 2022, the full Gasteig programme will be available at the interim site in the south of Munich.

If you want to move house in Munich, you need strong nerves, plenty of patience and a degree of luck! Before Lab Uganda sets off on its journey to a refugee camp in Uganda, the mobile music laboratory, which is housed in a truck, will be unveiled at the Gasteig as part of a programme of cultural activities. It’s been six months since »Türmer München« – the Munich Vigil – was launched at sunset on 12 December last year. Since then, 365 participants have stood vigil over Munich for a total of 21,900 minutes.

buildingSMART Deutschland e.V. has completed five extraordinary projects using building information modelling, also known as BIM. The title of »BIM Champion 2021« in the Planning category was awarded to the Gasteig and its partners HENN architects and AEC3 Deutschland for the project to renovate the largest arts centre in Europe.

This morning, the first Vigil in the UK spent their hour looking out over the city. Like Munich’s »Türmer«, Vigils in Hull (as Kingston upon Hull is usually known) will spend a year watching over the Yorkshire city at sunrise and sunset every day from the roof of Hull College.

The small row of shops next to the S-Bahn entrance at the Gasteig has acquired a new temporary use. The »Bellevue di Monaco« has moved into one of the shops and presents its wide range of projects there.

Usually, a general contractor provides all construction services for a building project. For our interim premises, this is NÜSSLI, which has a reputation for flexible construction at superior quality. The company’s strategy for success already shows in the Philharmonic Hall and Gasteig Sendling’s modular buildings.

We start our visit with future neighbours in an old industrial building that once housed an armature winding works. Complex coils for machines were made and wound here, some of which still adorn the bare corridors. Today, the building houses studios, offices, rehearsal rooms and workshops, spread over several floors. Our first appointment is awaiting us on the third floor.

A little way upriver, next to the Heizkraftwerk Süd power station and near the banks of the Isar, a new cultural powerhouse is being built – Gasteig Sendling. GET SET – Situated at the corner of Brudermühlstraße and Schäftlarnstraße, Gasteig Sendling is set to open its doors in early October. GO – For the next few years, the interim quarter with its old industrial buildings and modern architecture, will provide a unique mix of culture and education, high culture and subculture.

With the TELL ME project, from the Gasteig contemporary dance series »Gasteig moves«, Alfonso Fernández Sánchez creates an open platform for dialogue and expression. »At the end of the day, it’s about sincerity,« he says, dancing and narrating to an empty Philharmonic Hall in Chapter 1 of this performance last December.

Hall E is the centrepiece of the Gasteig’s interim quarter in the Sendling district. After the move, the listed transformer hall will serve as the central foyer as well as housing the library and a gallery, among others. The photographer Herbert Stolz was on site for the department for heritage conservation and documented the imposing hall from an artistic perspective.

The heart of the Gasteig Sendling is the listed Hall E, a red brick edifice that once served as a transformer hall and is now being given a new lease of life after many years’ disuse. But converting a listed building has its pitfalls. That’s why the Gasteig architects worked closely with the Bayerisches Landesamt für Denkmalpflege – the Bavarian state department for heritage conservation – which is responsible for listed buildings like this striking brick hall. Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Architekt Mathias Pfeil, the General Curator for heritage conservation, explains why Hall E is of particular interest to his department.

Thanks to our extensive and well-maintained ventilation systems, the entire building enjoys an excellent indoor air quality. Even at the beginning of the pandemic, Munich’s premier culture centre had a head start in the fight against the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Since then, the systems have been retrofitted to make the Gasteig even safer during the winter months. From November 2020, the Münchner Volkshochschule adult education centre (MVHS) has a new managing director. Arriving in the middle of the corona pandemic and in the last season before the Gasteig’s temporary relocation, Dr. Martin Ecker left his position as director of the Nuremberg Bildungscampus, which comprises the city’s library and adult education centre, to return to Munich, where he studied and lived for many years.

They arrived even before the first excavator: several amateur photographers who have been documenting the Sendling site ever since construction work began there. They are participants in a long-term photographic project of the Münchner Volkshochschule community college. In a public exhibition consisting of several episodes, we will present a selection of their photographs to date.

Munich-based architecture office Henn has produced a video to demonstrate their vision of the future Gasteig. With its transparent, open architecture, the renovated and remodelled Gasteig aims to gain worldwide recognition as »Munich’s pulsating cultural heart«. This video tour is based on a 3D model of the New Gasteig. It was generated using the BIM (Building Information Modelling) method, which digitally records and models all relevant building data to help improve the planning process.

On 17 November, in the dark of night, a crane hoisted the Shelter for the »Türmer München« performance onto the Gasteig’s roof. Made of wood and steel and weighing six tonnes, the temporary structure will provide Munich’s Vigils with a memorable hour high above the city – twice each day for a whole year, starting on 12 December 2020.

Starting Monday, 2. November, stricter Covid-19 containment rules apply nationwide until and including 30 November. No events can take place in the Gasteig during this period. The Munich City Library will remain open and most of the courses offered by the Münchner Volkshochschule adult education centre will continue to take place. At the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, the practice rooms remain available to students for use under strict conditions.

The stack room of the Munich City Library in the Gasteig is no exception: Since the end of August, three van loads of books a day have been making their way to a former printing works in Oberschleißheim. Gasteig Sendling is moving to a lively community! Right next to the construction site is the rehearsal space for International Munich Art Lab (IMAL), a project funded by the Department of Arts and Culture where young people spend two years doing artistic activities. Claudine is in charge of the choreography for acrobatics, juggling and stage fighting and she has an unusual coffee ritual that links her to the construction workers. She explains how it started.

Unfortunately, the 2020 ARD International Music Competition cannot take place this year. Due to the corona pandemic, the 69th edition with the planned categories of flute, trombone, string quartet and piano has been postponed to 2022.

The Munich Philharmonic and the Bayerischer Rundfunk ensembles have announced the early end of their 2019/20 concert season. Due to the implemented corona pandemic containment measures and the associated bans on events, the concerts still planned up to and including 7 July 2020 had to be cancelled.

Normally, the Munich Philharmonic meets in the Gasteig almost every day. Cellist Stephan Haack even refers to the Philharmonic Hall as his »living room«. But the Coronavirus has changed all that: Joint rehearsals and concerts have been suspended and for the time being the orchestra members cannot have personal contact with each other or with their audience. Instead, they now give private sessions to enjoy at home.
